Regulation of behavioral maturation by a primer pheromone produced by adult worker honey bees.

چکیده
Previous research showed that the presence of older workers causes a delayed onset of foraging in younger individuals in honey bee colonies, but a specific worker inhibitory factor had not yet been identified. Here, we report on the identification of a substance produced by adult forager honey bees, ethyl oleate, that acts as a chemical inhibitory factor to delay age at onset of foraging. Ethyl oleate is synthesized de novo and is present in highest concentrations in the bee's crop. These results suggest that worker behavioral maturation is modulated via trophallaxis, a form of food exchange that also serves as a prominent communication channel in insect societies. Our findings provide critical validation for a model of self-organization explaining how bees are able to respond to fragmentary information with actions that are appropriate to the state of the whole colony.

Pheromone-mediated gene expression in the honey bee brain.
We tested the hypothesis that queen mandibular pheromone (QMP) causes changes in gene expression in the brain of the adult worker honey bee, and that these changes can be correlated to the downstream behavioral responses induced by QMP. In support of the first hypothesis, cage experiments revealed that QMP transiently regulated expression of several hundred genes and chronically regulated the e...
متن کاملPrimer effects of a brood pheromone on honeybee behavioural development.
Primer pheromones are thought to act in a variety of vertebrates and invertebrates but only a few have been chemically identified. We report that a blend of ten fatty-acid esters found on the cuticles of honeybee larvae, already known as a kairomone, releaser pheromone and primer pheromone, also act as a primer pheromone in the regulation of division of labour among adult workers. Bees in colon...
متن کاملSocial Modulation of Stress Reactivity and Learning in Young Worker Honey Bees
Alarm pheromone and its major component isopentylacetate induce stress-like responses in forager honey bees, impairing their ability to associate odors with a food reward. We investigated whether isopentylacetate exposure decreases appetitive learning also in young worker bees. While isopentylacetate-induced learning deficits were observed in guards and foragers collected from a queen-right col...

SYNTHETIC QUEEN MANDIBULAR GLAND PHEROMONE (QMP) WAS APPLIED TO HONEY BEE COLONIES TO TEST TWO HYPOTHESES: (i) QMP acts like a primer pheromone in the regulation of age-related division of labor, and (ii) this primer effect, if present, varies in three strains of workers that show genetically-based differences in their retinue attraction response to QMP (a pheromone releaser effect). Strains of...
متن کاملRegulation of brain gene expression in honey bees by brood pheromone.
Pheromones are very important in animal communication. To learn more about the molecular basis of pheromone action, we studied the effects of a potent honey bee pheromone on brain gene expression. Brood pheromone (BP) caused changes in the expression of hundreds of genes in the bee brain in a manner consistent with its known effects on behavioral maturation. Brood pheromone exposure in young be...
